Investigating the Gut Microbiome to Better Treat Chronic Pain
THE GUT MICROBIOME IN CHRONIC PAIN
Our gut is home to myriads of microorganisms, commonly known as the gut microbiome. in recent years, the role of these microorganisms in human health and diseases is unfolding. Our team studies the role of gut bacteria in chronic pain. We aim to characterize the specific changes in the composition and function of the gut microbiome in various pain conditions, to decipher the mechanisms underlying chronic pain and to develop new diagnostic and therapeutic tools for chronic pain.
RESEARCH PROJECTS
Current Areas of Study
FIBROMYALGIA-MICROBIOME PROJECT
Fibromyalgia is a common syndrome of chronic pain affecting hundreds of millions worldwide. In collaboration with our colleagues at McGill, we found specific changes in the composition and function of the gut bacteria in fibromyalgia patients, and are now focused on developing microbiome-based treatments for the syndrome.
THE BIOSIGNATURE OF CHRONIC PAIN
Chronic pain is highly prevalent worldwide. In this ambitious project, we have partnered with leading pain researchers and machine-learning experts to create a large bio-bank of samples from chronic pain patients. Using AI we hope to uncover the specific biosignatures of the mechanisms underlying most pain conditions.
UNDERSTANDING COMPLEX REGIONAL PAIN SYNDROME
Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a poorly understood pain syndrome, which may be debilitating for affected individuals. Our team is studying the specific changes in the composition of gut bacteria in individuals with CRPS hoping to gain better insights into the syndrome and to develop new treatments.
