In recent years, there has been growing interest in the role of the gut microbiome in various health conditions. One area of particular interest is chronic pain, and out team is at the forefront of this research. Located in Haifa, Israel, Minerbi Lab is an academic research lab affiliated with the Technion Faculty of Medicine and Rambam Health Campus. Our work focuses on investigating the role of the gut microbiome in chronic pain conditions, with a specific emphasis on fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia is a complex and often misunderstood condition characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, and sleep disturbances. It affects millions of people worldwide, and until now, treatment options have been limited. Recently, our team has made significant strides in developing a microbiome-based treatment for fibromyalgia, offering hope to those suffering from this debilitating condition. So, what exactly is a microbiome-based treatment? The gut microbiome refers to the trillions of microorganisms that reside in our digestive system. These microorganisms play a crucial role in our overall health, including immune function, metabolism, and even brain health. By studying the gut microbiome, our team has discovered that there is a link between the composition of the microbiome and chronic pain conditions like fibromyalgia. By analyzing the gut microbiome of fibromyalgia patients, we can identify specific imbalances or dysfunctions that may be contributing to their symptoms. This allows us to target the gut microbiome with the aim of restore balance to the microbiome and alleviate pain.
Recently, we have completed an open-label pilot study to evaluate the effects of fecal microbiome transplantation from healthy donors to women with severe fibromyalgia.
The results were encouraging: 11 of 15 women reported significant improvement in their symptom burden including pain, fatigue, sleep and cognitive problems. Using quantitative sensory testing, we also observed significant improvement in pain thresholds following the treatment.
